Many believe Heikel's role to be one of pro-SCAF propaganda, designed to put down further protests, and to paint protesters as being either anti-Egyptian or anti-democratic. It has also been suggested that he has tried to inflame what were generally peaceful relations between Coptic Christians (who number about 10% of the population) and Muslims in Egypt.
