Photo of Gilad Shalit in his IDF uniform just after arriving back in Israel from Gaza.
Shalit, who holds dual French and Israeli citizenship, was captured on the 25th of June 2006 by Hamas militants, from inside Israel, but very close to the border with Gaza, in a cross-border raid. He was released on October the 18th 2011 in return for 1,027 Palestinian's who have been jailed in Israeli jails, often in inhumane conditions and for very little whatsoever. Many of the Palestinians who are to be released have served decades in Israel's jail system.
The first 477 Palestinian prisoners were released on the same day as the Shalit photo opportunity featured above, and according to Al-Jazeera... "from the [over] 450, 131 will be returned to Gaza, while 110 will be sent home to the West Bank. Six are Israeli Palestinians. Another 203 remaining prisoners will be deported, with 40 barred from Israel and the Palestinian territories." A full list of released Palestinian prisoners can be found here. |
