| The UK collected about UK£10m in 2009 from fishing licenses for their economic zone surrounding the Falkland Islands, which stretches for up to 500km from the Falklands coasts. About half of the islands UK100m yearly GDP is derived from fishing, with about UK£14.5m collected in fishing taxes during the 2009-2010 fiscal year alone. The large British-controlled area is thought to hold large deposits of hydrocarbon, and the UK also earns income from tourism locally, many thousands of miles - and a whole hemisphere away - from the UK mainland itself. |
